Tanigawadake Tenjindaira
Big snow, bold terrain—Tenjindaira is Japan’s backcountry gateway.
Tanigawadake Tenjindaira, Japan.
$6,995 CDN / Person (Taxes and fees included)
Tanigawadake Tenjindaira is Japan’s powder paradise that few international skiers have discovered — until now. Tucked away in Gunma Prefecture just a couple of hours from Tokyo, “Tenjin” (as the locals call it) combines huge snowfall, steep terrain, and a peaceful small-town atmosphere. This 7-night adventure is all about lift-accessed backcountry skiing: we use the ropeway and lifts to gain elevation, then venture off-piste into Tenjin’s famous bowls, glades, and chutes – often scoring untouched lines days after a storm. And because only short boot-packs or traverses are needed to reach the goods, you’ll spend your energy skiing instead of climbing. Our ACMG-certified guides have years of experience in these mountains, ensuring you can safely push your limits. They’ll assess conditions daily, finding the best stashes and managing avalanche risks so you can focus on the thrill. If the notorious weather rolls in – Tanigawadake’s nickname “Weather Mountain” is well-earned – we have the flexibility to adjust plans, whether that means chasing powder in the trees or hitting a nearby ski area.
With an average season snowfall measured in meters, expect nothing less than endless face shots and top-quality powder on this trip. Better yet, when the weather clears you’ll be treated to breathtaking views from the top of Tanigawadake – a panorama of snow-draped peaks and deep valleys that few ever see. Despite its mighty terrain (in-bounds runs up to 38° pitch and even more challenging lines beyond), Tenjindaira remains a hidden gem away from Japan’s mainstream resorts. That means minimal crowds, an authentic vibe, and ample fresh tracks. The combination of massive snowfall and truly big-mountain terrain here is virtually unmatched in Japan’s ski scene, making Tenjin a prize for those in the know.
